A key technical resistance level to watch as S&P 500 hits an all-time high

US stocks have started August at record levels, but the benchmark S&P 500 index faces a “critical” technical test before investors can declare a sustainable breakout.

The stock market has regained optimism as companies like Microsoft and Amazon.com Inc. have confirmed that aggressive artificial intelligence (AI) spending is translating into tangible financial returns.

Still, investors should “make sure before acting upon this rally as a breakout that it’s confirmed,” Katie Stockton – founder and managing partner of Fairlead Strategies – told clients in a recent note

What technical resistance must S&P 500 break?

A strong earnings season, featuring significant contribution from non-tech names as well, has been driving US stocks higher, with the S&P 500 currently up more than 20% versus its low in late March.

But Katie Stockton is refraining from calling it a decisive breakout until she sees “a couple of clear and consecutive closes above 7,620.”

Note that the benchmark index already made its first close above that level on August 4. Stockton views the 7,620 level as significant because it sits right above the market’s previous high of 7,610 in June.

In market mechanics, a previous high often creates psychological and algorithmic “ceiling” where selling pressure naturally concentrates.

What would happen if SPX breaks above that resistance?

A decisive break above 7,620 could rewrite the playbook for late-summer trading.

Historically, August brings sluggish volumes and seasonal headwinds, but if the benchmark index finds support above that level, it could reignite buying momentum.

Why? Because a breakout would give institutional investors the technical green light to reallocate capital into high-beta growth names and mega-cap tech stocks – some of which reclaimed market leadership just last week.

Simply put, instead of enduring a typical August lull, a validated breakout could force “sidelined” cash back into the market, accelerating the broader bull run into the final months of the year.

What to invest in once the index clears that technical level?

Once the breakout is validated, Oppenheimer’s head of technical analysis – Ari Wald – views high-conviction tech names as the primary engine for further gains.

In particular, he believes “parts of software” within the broader technology sector are positioned for material strength.

According to Ari Wald, a broader breakout may also mark a turning point for semiconductor stocks.

Following an aggressive wave of profit-taking in July that dragged the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) down more than 20%, chipmakers appear ripe for a resurgence.

That said, Oppenheimer’s playbook extends well beyond technology, advocating for a “balanced” exposure to cyclical and defensive pockets showing constructive chart patterns.

In its research note, the firm also highlighted pharma, big banks, biotech, brokerages, oil refineries, and capital goods within industrials as top themes for investment in the second half of 2026.
