Tom Lee reveals his S&P 500 target for the end of August

Despite concerns about artificial intelligence (AI) capex, valuation fears, and a US-Iran conflict that refuses to subside, the S&P 500 index has soared higher over the trailing three months.

Still, Fundstrat’s head of research, Tom Lee, believes US stocks are not out of juice just yet. In fact, the index will extend gains further and hit 8,000 by the end of this month, he told clients in a report this week.

If Lee’s prediction proves accurate, it would mean another 4% rally in the benchmark index from current levels.

Why does Lee see further upside ahead?

Lee’s bullish thesis is premised on a prolonged period of range-bound trading he does not read as exhaustion but as structural groundwork for an explosive move to the upside.

“The bigger the base, the bigger the breakout,” he explained.

Importantly, major indices like the Nasdaq 100 are holding comfortably above their major moving averages (MAs), reinforcing that market structure remains largely bullish.

In recent sessions, minor dips have met with aggressive buying rather than a broader institutional unloading, which brings Lee sufficient confidence to predict significant upside ahead.

What else could drive S&P 500 higher?

The backdrop supports Lee’s thesis as well. The Q2 earnings season is helping alleviate concerns of an AI bubble and unsustainable tech valuations.

Consensus estimates for FY27 are moving higher, as AI investments and subsequent productivity gains boost profit margins faster than Wall Street had expected.

On the other hand, geopolitical anxiety is showing signs of cooling off.

Growing optimism surrounding a potential diplomatic breakthrough between Washington and Tehran to reopen the critical Strait of Hormuz has helped relieve crude oil prices.

De-escalating tensions along this key maritime energy corridor have effectively capped headline risks, pulling down energy price volatility and giving global equity markets additional headroom to build on their recent gains.

Market breadth is broadening out

Finally, Tom Lee remains bullish because market participation is showing encouraging durability as buying interest expands well beyond narrow mega-cap concentration.

While cornerstone market leaders like the “Magnificent Seven” continue to anchor index stability, upside momentum is spreading into software, memory chip manufacturers, and digital assets like Ethereum.

This broadening breadth reflects a healthy structural rotation rather than an exhausted mega-cap rally.

Investors are actively re-engaging with high-beta growth pockets that had lagged during the early summer consolidation phase.

Historical market cycles demonstrate that when secondary growth drivers step up to share the heavy lifting alongside big tech leaders, bull markets gain both durability and length.

All in all, this synchronized advance across multiple asset classes signals deep underlying liquidity and strong institutional appetite, laying the foundation for the S&P 500’s push toward the 8,000 threshold that Lee has predicted.
