A $14.7M reason why Intuitive Machines stock is sinking today

by August 14, 2026
written by August 14, 2026

Intuitive Machines (LUNR) shares opened in the red this morning as a $14.7 million charge made the space exploration company come in shy of Q2 estimates.

While LUNR posted a 4x year-on-year increase in its quarterly revenue to a record $206.2 million, and significantly expanded its backlog as well, the number fell notably short of nearly $224 million that experts had forecast.

The miss adds to pressure on Intuitive Machines stock that was already down some 60% heading into the quarterly print.

Why Intuitive Machines missed Q2 estimates

Intuitive Machines Inc failed to meet Q2 estimates partly because its operating results and adjusted EBITDA were squeezed by project modifications.

The company disclosed a “$14.7 million” estimated-at-completion (EAC) adjustment specifically tied to its upcoming IM-4 lunar lander mission.

These cost overruns stemmed from lander modifications required to accommodate new payload requirements.

Specifically, integrating client-requested scope changes mid-development pushed engineering expenses higher and compressed gross margins during the period.

While these custom payload adaptations reflect growing demand for complex space infrastructure, the upfront financial hit proved heavy enough to drag adjusted EBITDA down to a negative $13.8 million loss.

Following the post-earnings dip, LUNR stock is testing its 20-day moving average (MA) – with a decisive break below $14.20 expected to accelerate bearish momentum in the near-term.

Guidance wasn’t particularly bullish for LUNR stock

Adding to investor unease, Intuitive Machines merely reaffirmed its full-year revenue guidance of at least $ 900 million.

While this still implies massive annual growth, traders had hoped for an upward revision following recent commercial wins to help offset the top-line shortfall in Q2.

Management also reiterated expectations for full-year positive adjusted EBITDA.

However, after posting $13.8 million adjusted EBITDA loss this quarter, achieving the initial target will demand an aggressive operational turnaround in the second half of the year.

Simply put, simply reiterating existing 2026 financial target proved insufficient to protect Intuitive Machines shares from a “sell-the-news” reaction today.

How to play Intuitive Machines shares after Q2 earnings?

Despite the immediate post-earnings dip, Wall Street’s broader outlook on LUNR shares remains overwhelmingly constructive.

Analysts point to the space infrastructure firm’s massive $1.76 billion order backlog as clear proof of durable long-term demand from both commercial clients and NASA programs.

Crucially, the payload adjustments that triggered this quarter’s cost overruns ultimately strengthen the firm’s technical capabilities for high-value future missions.

With federal lunar contracts expanding and a strong cash position providing runway, institutional consensus views today’s pull-back as a temporary operational hiccup rather than a fundamental breakdown.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the consensus rating on Intuitive Machines remains at Buy, with the mean price target of nearly $43 indicating potential for a more than 150% rally over the next 12 months.
