Will Viktor Hovland survive the final round? Scheffler and McIlroy lurk behind

Viktor Hovland, the 28-year-old Norwegian, is eyeing a major career milestone if today goes as planned. With the 2026 PGA Tour season drawing to a close, he holds a one-point lead at the East Lake Golf Course.

It will not be easy for Hovland as he has some of the best players in the game right behind him. Ryan Gerard, a 27-year old American who has recorded just one win in the PGA – at the Barracuda Championship – is following closely by.

Adam Scott, Ludvig Aberg, Chris Gotterup, and Scottie Scheffler, the world’s number 1 golfer, all follow with a minus 12 score.

This week’s scoring suggests Hovland has a lot of work to do. For example, Rory McIlroy shot a 7-under 65 on Moving Day Saturday, climbing to T7. Hovland, by contrast, managed only a 5-under round that same day. It’s a reminder that another player could make a similarly big move today — and derail Hovland’s chances.

Hovland is one of the most capable players to win the season. He has had eight PGA Tour victories, and two on the European Tour. He ranks as the 15th best golfer according to the Official World Gold Ranking (OWGR). Also, he has made over $43 million in official earnings at the PGA Tour, including winning the 2023 PGA Championship.

Polymarket traders are giving Hovland a 37% chance of winning the Tour Championship. He’s followed closely by Ryan Gerard and Scottie Scheffler, who share an 18% chance.

The 29 players competing at this weekend’s Tour Championship – J.J Spaun withdrew – are eying a $40 million payout. The winner will go home with $10 million in cash, with the second one taking home $5 million. Most notably, the last one will make over $335k.

Scottie Scheffler has made over $20 million this year after recording two wins, and is followed by Cameron Young, Matt Fitzpatrick, and Wyndham Clark.
